As “Citizen of the Year”
BUFFALO,
N.Y. – Damon & Morey attorney James N. Schmit
was honored as the “Citizen of the Year” by the Industrial Relations
Research Association for Western New York. The award was presented at
the organization’s annual awards dinner on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at
the Hearthstone Manor.
During more than 30 years of experience in this area, Mr. Schmit has
represented employers in labor relations, contract negotiations,
arbitration proceedings, employment discrimination litigation,
wrongful termination actions and safety and health matters, including
related trial and appellate practice in federal and state courts. His
specific litigation experience includes actions to enjoin strikes,
proceedings to compel or stay arbitration, and the defense of
employment discrimination, wrongful termination and unfair
representation cases.
James N. Schmit is chair of Damon & Morey’s labor and employment law
practice group. The firm’s clients include a large variety of
employers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Mr.
Schmit has appeared before various administrative agencies including
the National Labor Relations Board, the New York State Labor Relations
Board, the New York State Public Employee Relations Board, the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission, the New York State Division of
Human Rights, the United States Department of Labor and the
Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. He has appeared
before the United States Supreme Court in a representation matter
arising under the National Labor Relations Act and is listed in the
national directory Best Lawyers in America.
He formerly chaired the Labor Law Committee of the Erie County Bar
Association, and is presently a member of the New York Management
Attorneys Conference as well as the Erie County, State and American
Bar Associations. Mr. Schmit frequently lectures on various aspects of
labor and employment law and is an adjunct faculty member of Cornell
University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
The honoring body, the Western New York Chapter of the Industrial
Relations Research Association, has been one of the largest and most
active IRRA chapters in the country. Since 1965, the Chapter has
worked to improve the knowledge and understanding of labor, industrial
and employment relations and has sought to maintain an open dialogue
among labor, management, academe and government agencies. The Chapter

Named To The Villa Maria College Board of Trustees
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Damon & Morey attorney Edward
P. Yankelunas has been named to the Villa Maria College Board of
Trustees. Total membership is now twenty-eight.
Mr. Yankelunas is a Partner at Damon & Morey LLP, practicing in the
firm’s Business Litigation Department. He works primarily with
corporate and business clients on complex construction and commercial
litigation in both state and federal courts. His construction
litigation clients include public and private owners, developers,
prime contractors, and subcontractors. He defends sureties against
claims on payment and performance bonds and other litigation matters
involving bonding issues. Mr. Yankelunas is also involved in the
negotiation and drafting of construction contracts and liquidating
agreements.
Mr. Yankelunas received his B.A. degree in 1978 from the State
University of New York at Geneseo, and his J.D. degree from the State
University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, where he served as
Senior Editor of the Buffalo Law Review. He is a member of the Erie
County Bar Association and is admitted to practice in all New York
State Courts, U.S. District Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
