Barbara L. Schifeling is a Partner at
Damon & Morey LLP, practicing in the firm’s
Litigation Department, concentrating in the areas of medical
malpractice defense and environmental coverage litigation. She serves as
a member of both the Management and Client Development Committees.
Ms. Schifeling devotes a significant portion of her practice to
defending medical professionals who are the subject of litigation, is a
frequent lecturer on medical/legal issues to members of the health care
community and has presented mock trials to hospital risk managers and
nursing groups. She is co-chair of the firm’s Health Care Practice
Group. She has conducted classes at the Nursing School of the State
University of New York at Buffalo, and has presented at a joint
medical/law school seminar. Ms. Schifeling has been an adjunct faculty member
at SUNY at Buffalo School of Law where she taught a course on
depositions. Ms. Schifeling chaired a board which established a family
health center which offered an alternative health care model to family
practice residents.
Professional memberships include the Western New York Trial Lawyers
Association, the Erie County Bar Association and the New York State Bar
Association. She is past president and a current member of the Western
New York Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York
and the recipient of the 1997 Achievement Award. Ms. Schifeling
was named as one of Business First of Buffalo's Women Who Mean
Business Award winners in 2005. She has served as
Western New York liaison to JALBCA (Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer
Alert), an organization which promotes awareness of breast cancer.
Ms. Schifeling is a member and an officer of the Board of Directors of
the YWCA. She has
authored articles relating to health reform, including “Health Care in
Distress - Can the Clintons Fix It?” and “Clinton’s Solomonic Approach
to Medical Malpractice Reform.” She co-authored an article on mentoring
entitled, Women Mentoring Women: Modern Application of an Old Tradition
and has completed an article on the proposed HMO Liability Bill
for New York State. Ms. Schifeling co-presented on the topic of
Alternative outside counsel agreements at a national meeting of the
American Academy of Health Care Attorneys.
